Introduction to Fan Features

Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan is an efficient, low-consumption, easily-maintained and general-purpose ventilation and exhaust device. It uses an integrated direct-drive structure between the motor and impeller and an open type structure. The fan housing can be opened quickly without disassembling the complete fan or ductwork, allowing direct cleaning and descaling of the impeller and inside of the housing, removal of debris, motor inspection and troubleshooting. It provides a large airflow rate, sufficient air pressure and uniform air supply. The direct-drive structure produces extremely low transmission vibration, while its low power consumption and high energy efficiency save electricity during long-term operation. It is suitable for continuous ventilation around the clock.

Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan for Industrial Ventilation

When I talk with customers about Industrial Exhaust Fans, I usually start with one simple question: what kind of air do you need to move, and where does that air need to go? It sounds basic, but this question often decides whether a ventilation system will work well after installation.

Our Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan is designed for industrial air exhaust, process ventilation, workshop ventilation, equipment exhaust, and other applications where stable airflow and a practical fan structure are needed. We focus on making the fan fit the actual ventilation system instead of simply selecting a larger motor or a bigger fan.

At Zhejiang Shangyang Industrial Fan Co., Ltd., we have worked in industrial fan design, manufacturing and sales for around 20 years. Our sales company is located in Shanghai, China, while our production facility is located at No. 6-8, Bifa Road, Xinbi Subdistrict, Jinyun County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province.

Over the years, our factory has developed and manufactured many types of industrial fans, including Centrifugal Fans, High-Temperature Fans, induced draft fans, axial fans, Low-Noise Centrifugal Fans, High-Pressure Fans, stainless steel centrifugal fans, hot air circulating fans, mixing fans and explosion-proof centrifugal fans.

We also manufacture both standard and non-standard industrial ventilation equipment. This is important because every factory has its own duct layout, working temperature, airflow requirement, pressure loss and installation conditions.

In this product page, I will explain how our Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan works, why we use a direct-drive structure, what the open-type design means, where the fan can be used, how we manufacture it, and what information I recommend customers provide before ordering.

1. What Is a Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan?

A Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan is an Industrial Ventilation Fan that uses a direct connection between the motor and the fan rotating assembly. The open-type structure is designed for suitable industrial ventilation arrangements where the fan can be installed according to the customer's ductwork and equipment layout.

The name may sound technical, but the idea is quite easy to understand.

Direct-drive means the motor drives the fan directly. There is no conventional belt and pulley transmission between the motor and the fan shaft. This gives the equipment a relatively simple mechanical structure.

Open type refers to the structural arrangement of the fan and its installation. Depending on the actual model and application, the fan can be integrated into a ventilation system where the inlet, outlet and surrounding equipment are arranged according to the project design.

I do not consider this fan to be a product that should be selected only by looking at its appearance. The important question is whether its airflow and pressure characteristics match the ventilation system.

For example, a factory may need to remove hot air from a production line. Another customer may need to exhaust fumes from machinery. A third customer may need a fan for a dust collection system. All three applications require air movement, but their system resistance and operating conditions can be very different.

That is why our technical team normally asks for the actual working conditions before confirming a model.

Direct Drive Makes the Structure Simple

In a traditional belt-drive fan, the motor rotates a pulley, the belt transfers power, and another pulley turns the fan shaft. This arrangement is useful in many applications because it can provide flexibility in speed selection.

In our direct-drive arrangement, the motor is connected directly to the rotating assembly.

There are fewer transmission components, so there is no drive belt to tension or replace. For customers looking for a compact industrial exhaust fan with a simple transmission structure, this can be a useful option.

At the same time, I always explain that direct drive is not automatically the right answer for every project. Belt-drive fans can be useful where flexible mechanical speed adjustment is important. Fan selection should always follow the application.

2. How Our Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan Works

The working principle is straightforward.

When the motor starts, it rotates the fan impeller. The rotating impeller moves air through the fan. Depending on the fan design, the air enters through the inlet, receives energy from the rotating blades and is discharged through the outlet into the connected duct or process system.

For industrial ventilation, the fan has to overcome the resistance of the entire air path.

This resistance can come from ducts, elbows, filters, dampers, hoods, silencers, collectors and other equipment.

This is why I never recommend choosing an industrial exhaust fan based only on airflow.

Airflow and Pressure Must Work Together

Airflow tells us how much air the fan needs to move. Pressure tells us how much resistance the fan needs to overcome.

If a customer tells me that a system needs a certain airflow but does not know the system pressure, I usually ask for the duct size, duct length, number of bends, filter information and other equipment details.

These details help us understand the real working point of the fan.

A fan may perform very differently after it is connected to a long duct compared with when it operates with a short and open discharge path.

Why the Motor Matters

The motor is the power source of the fan. Its power, voltage, frequency, speed and operating conditions need to match the fan design.

For overseas customers, I also recommend confirming electrical requirements early in the project because voltage and frequency standards can vary between countries.

We do not simply add motor power to solve every ventilation problem. If the fan itself is not correctly selected, a larger motor does not necessarily create the expected system performance.

What About Noise?

Every rotating fan creates some noise. The actual sound level depends on fan speed, airflow, pressure, blade design, motor, installation and connected ductwork.

For projects with strict noise requirements, we recommend considering the complete ventilation system rather than evaluating the fan alone.

Our product range also includes low-noise centrifugal fans for applications where noise control is an important part of the design.

3. Main Features of the Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan

From our manufacturing experience, I would describe the main strengths of this industrial exhaust fan in several simple points.

1. Direct-Drive Transmission

The direct-drive arrangement reduces the number of mechanical transmission parts.

There are no conventional belts and pulleys between the motor and fan shaft. This makes routine inspection simpler because there is no belt tension to check or belt replacement schedule to manage.

2. Compact Equipment Arrangement

Because the fan does not need a traditional belt transmission assembly, the overall mechanical arrangement can be relatively compact.

This can be helpful where installation space is limited.

3. Stable Air Exhaust

We design and manufacture the fan according to the required airflow and pressure range.

The goal is not simply to make the impeller spin quickly. The goal is to provide useful airflow at the actual system working point.

4. Flexible Industrial Applications

The fan can be used for general factory ventilation, machinery exhaust, process ventilation, equipment cooling, fume extraction and other industrial air movement applications.

5. Practical Maintenance

A simpler transmission system means fewer drive components that need routine attention.

Of course, direct drive does not mean maintenance-free. Operators still need to check the motor, bearings, impeller, casing, fasteners and electrical system according to the operating conditions.

6. Custom Configuration

We manufacture standard and non-standard industrial fans. Depending on the project, we can discuss fan dimensions, airflow, pressure, motor selection, material, installation direction and other requirements.

7. Suitable for Continuous Industrial Work

Many factories need ventilation equipment that can operate for long periods.

For continuous-duty applications, I pay particular attention to the motor, rotating assembly, bearings, balance, operating temperature and installation conditions.

4. Technical Selection: What We Check Before Production

Before we manufacture a Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan, we need to understand how the fan will actually be used.

This technical step is important because two fans that look almost identical from the outside may have very different operating requirements.

Air Volume

Air volume is one of the first values we need.

It tells us how much air the ventilation system needs to move. The required airflow may come from a ventilation calculation, equipment supplier, process requirement or existing system design.

Pressure

Pressure is equally important.

The fan must overcome the resistance of the system. A long duct, many elbows, filters and treatment equipment can all increase pressure loss.

Temperature

Temperature affects fan material and configuration.

Normal-temperature factory ventilation is very different from hot-air exhaust from a kiln or thermal process.

If the air temperature is high, I need to know the normal operating temperature as well as possible peak temperature.

Air Characteristics

We also need to know what the fan is handling.

Clean air, dust, oil mist, paint fumes, corrosive gases and humid air can require different material or structural choices.

If the exhaust contains chemicals or combustible substances, the customer should provide detailed information before the fan configuration is confirmed.

Installation Dimensions

Installation space is another practical issue.

I recommend sending the duct dimensions, inlet and outlet position, available space and installation drawing whenever possible.

This helps us avoid a common problem: the fan works correctly on paper but does not fit comfortably into the actual equipment room.

5. Applications and Industries

Our industrial fans are used in many industries. The Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan can be considered when the project requires reliable industrial air exhaust and a direct-drive configuration.

Factory and Workshop Ventilation

Factories often generate heat, moisture, fumes or process air.

An industrial exhaust fan can help remove unwanted air and support the overall ventilation plan.

Machinery Exhaust

Production machines can release heat, oil mist, smoke or other process contaminants.

Local exhaust can help move contaminated air away from the work area before it spreads through the workshop.

Coating and Painting

Painting and coating systems often require controlled exhaust.

Our company has long experience with coating fans and environmental protection fans. This background helps us understand the airflow challenges found in coating equipment and industrial paint systems.

Dust Collection

In a dust collection system, the exhaust fan provides the airflow needed to move dust-laden air through the duct and collection equipment.

For this application, the pressure loss of the dust collector and filters needs to be included when selecting the fan.

Printing Industry

Printing equipment can produce heat, solvent fumes and process exhaust.

The ventilation fan can be integrated into the process exhaust system according to the actual production conditions.

Chemical Industry

Chemical applications require more careful selection.

The gas composition, temperature and corrosion characteristics should be confirmed before material selection.

For hazardous or potentially explosive environments, the fan configuration and required certification must be specifically confirmed.

Thermal and Industrial Equipment

Thermal equipment, boilers and other process systems may require exhaust or induced draft fans.

Our product range includes high-temperature fans and induced draft fans for applications where a standard exhaust fan is not appropriate.

Food and General Process Industries

Food processing and general production lines can also require ventilation for heat, humidity, odor or process air removal.

The actual fan configuration should be selected according to the process conditions rather than simply the industry name.

6. How We Manufacture Our Industrial Exhaust Fans

From my point of view, fan quality starts long before the impeller begins to rotate.

It starts with understanding the application correctly.

Technical Confirmation

Before production, our technical team confirms the main operating requirements, including airflow, pressure, motor power, speed, temperature, material requirements and installation dimensions.

For non-standard equipment, we also review drawings and installation information provided by the customer.

Fan Design

We select a suitable fan structure according to the working point.

The impeller, casing, inlet, outlet and motor arrangement all need to work together.

We have accumulated practical experience in coating fans and environmental protection fans, and we have continued to improve these products through more than a decade of product development and optimization.

Material Processing

The material is selected according to the actual environment.

For general applications, carbon steel may be suitable. Where corrosion resistance is important, stainless steel or other suitable materials can be considered.

I prefer to select materials according to real operating conditions instead of simply choosing the most expensive option.

Impeller Manufacturing

The impeller is one of the most important components of a Centrifugal Exhaust Fan.

Blade shape, size, angle and assembly quality all influence the fan's operating characteristics.

After fabrication, the rotating assembly needs appropriate balancing and inspection.

Casing Manufacturing

The fan casing guides the airflow from the impeller toward the discharge outlet.

Accurate fabrication and assembly help ensure that the internal airflow path and mechanical structure remain stable.

Direct-Drive Assembly

During assembly, the motor and rotating assembly are connected according to the specified configuration.

Alignment, fastening and rotating clearance are checked carefully because a direct-drive fan does not have a belt transmission to absorb or compensate for poor assembly.

Testing

Before delivery, we inspect the relevant dimensions, assembly, rotating components and agreed product configuration.

For applicable specialized products, our company also has national test reports and relevant certifications, including explosion-proof certification and energy efficiency certification for applicable products.

7. Production Time, Delivery, Packaging and Service

When I communicate with overseas customers, they often ask four practical questions: How long will production take? What will I receive? How will the fan be shipped? And how will it be protected during transportation?

Production Cycle

Our typical production cycle is approximately 7–20 working days.

This is a general reference. The actual lead time depends on the fan model, airflow, pressure, motor configuration, materials, customization and order quantity.

If a customer requires a special non-standard fan, I recommend confirming the technical specifications as early as possible because customization can affect the production schedule.

Delivery Standard

The normal delivery configuration includes the complete fan unit, motor and necessary accessories according to the agreed technical and commercial configuration.

For customized orders, the exact delivery list should be confirmed before production.

Payment Terms

Payment terms can be arranged according to the order and commercial agreement.

A common arrangement is a deposit before production, with the remaining balance paid before shipment.

The final payment schedule is confirmed with the customer before the order is released for production.

Transportation

For domestic orders, road transportation is commonly used.

For overseas customers, sea freight is often suitable for larger industrial equipment, while other logistics options can be considered according to destination, equipment size and delivery schedule.

Packaging

Packaging is selected according to the fan size and transportation conditions.

Depending on the product, we may use protective film, reinforced cartons, wooden frames or wooden cases.

For long-distance export transportation, suitable wooden protection can help reduce the risk of impact, moisture and movement during handling.

8. Why I Recommend Shangyang Fan for Industrial Ventilation Projects

There are many Industrial Fan Manufacturers in the market. From my perspective, the important question is not simply who can manufacture a fan, but who can understand the working condition behind the fan.

We have been working in the industrial fan field for around 20 years. Our technical design, manufacturing and sales teams have accumulated experience through long-term work with different industrial applications.

Our company is a national high-tech enterprise and a small- and medium-sized technology enterprise.

Our product development has a strong background in coating fans and environmental protection fans. Based on research and development experience from Taiwan, we have continuously improved, refined and optimized our products for more than ten years.

Our factory now produces various standard and non-standard industrial fans.

These include centrifugal fans, high-temperature fans, induced draft fans, axial fans, low-noise centrifugal fans, high-pressure fans, stainless steel centrifugal fans, hot air circulating fans, mixing fans and explosion-proof centrifugal fans.

Experience Across Multiple Industries

Our fans are used in coating, kiln, boiler, environmental protection, dust collection, thermal energy, printing, coating equipment, medical latex equipment, air-supported membrane, separation, cement, chemical and food industries.

This wide application range gives our engineering team a useful reference when we discuss new projects.

For example, a customer may have a ventilation problem that looks like a normal factory exhaust requirement. After checking the process, we may find that temperature, dust, chemical content or system resistance is actually the key factor.

That is where engineering communication becomes important.

Test Reports and Certifications

We possess multiple national test reports for specialized products and have obtained national explosion-proof certification, energy efficiency certification and other applicable certifications.

For customers who require certified equipment, we confirm the exact product model and configuration against the applicable certification instead of making a general claim that every fan has the same certification.

Standard and Non-Standard Manufacturing

Some customers know exactly which fan they need.

Others only know the airflow, pressure and installation space.

We can work with both situations.

For a standard product, we can confirm the configuration and production details directly. For a non-standard project, our technical team can review the application and discuss the appropriate fan structure.

10. Our Approach to Industrial Fan Selection

After many years in the industrial fan business, I have found that most fan selection problems can be avoided if the technical information is clear at the beginning.

Do not start with motor power.

Start with the process.

Tell us what the fan needs to move, how much air needs to be moved, how much resistance exists in the system, what temperature the air has, whether the air contains dust or chemicals, where the fan will be installed and how many hours it will operate.

From there, we can work backward to the appropriate fan structure and motor configuration.

For customers looking for a Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan, the direct-drive design can be a practical choice when a simple transmission arrangement, stable airflow and convenient routine maintenance are important.

At the same time, we will not recommend a direct-drive fan simply because the product name contains the word “direct-drive.” If another fan structure is more suitable for the working condition, I believe it is better to discuss that honestly before production.

That is how we approach industrial ventilation.

Our goal is to provide a fan that fits the system, not just a fan that looks good on a quotation sheet.

With around 20 years of experience in industrial fan design, manufacturing and sales, we continue to focus on practical engineering, product quality and customer requirements. Whether you need a standard industrial exhaust fan or a customized ventilation solution, our technical team can review the working conditions and help determine a suitable configuration.

If your project requires a Direct-Drive Open Type Exhaust Fan, you can provide us with the airflow, pressure, temperature, gas characteristics, duct information, installation dimensions and electrical requirements. With these details, we can evaluate the application more accurately and prepare a suitable technical proposal.
